How to Extend the Life of a Boiler Burner

Proper maintenance of a boiler burner is essential to extend its lifespan. This article will discuss how to maintain a boiler burner effectively. Before any maintenance, a thorough inspection of the burner and its components is necessary.

For oil-fired burners:

1. Clean the basket filter between the oil tank and the oil pump. Regularly cleaning the filter ensures smooth oil flow to the pump and reduces the risk of component failure. Check the filter for excessive wear or damage. Pressure Regulator – Inspect the fuel pressure regulator or pressure relief valve, ensuring the lock nut on the adjustable bolt is clean and easily accessible. If the bolt and nut are dirty or rusty, repair or replace the regulator. A malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator can cause burner failure.

2. Oil Pump – Inspect the oil pump, ensuring its seals are intact and the internal pressure is stable. Replace any damaged or leaking seals. If using hot oil, ensure all oil lines are properly insulated; if long oil lines are used, check their installation. Replace any damaged or poorly insulated oil lines.

3. Boiler Burner – For oil-fired burners, clean the "Y" type filter. Good heavy oil and residual oil filtration is crucial to prevent nozzle and valve clogging. Check the pressure differential across the burner to ensure it is operating correctly and the oil pressure is within the acceptable range. This ensures accurate fuel pressure readings after burner adjustments.

Adjust the atomizer extension length on the nozzle, and adjust and test the low oil pressure switch. When using heavy oil, inspect the fuel heating and control system, and check the oil temperature switch on the burner manifold. Consult the manufacturer for the required oil viscosity to ensure proper burner operation, and regularly check the viscosity of the heavy or residual oil used. Cleaning and lubricating the oil valve connections is also necessary. If the connection is faulty or too rough, it needs to be repaired or replaced with a suitable component. Clean the boiler burner nozzle regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
