Causes of large balls in kiln burners

Jan 18, 2025

Kiln burners are widely used in various production fields. Sometimes we will find that large balls occur in the kiln, which will affect the normal operation of the kiln burner. So, what is the cause of this problem?

SWT Burner will answer this question below.

1. Unstable and incomplete combustion of coal powder When the ash content of the original coal far exceeds the control target (22%±2%), the ash content of the kiln burner will be high and the fluctuation Q will be large. The coal powder is not burned completely, and the kiln burns, the ash is unevenly mixed, the flame is introduced too long, the flame head moves backward, and the high temperature of the kiln leads to the high temperature of the kiln tail, so that the material at the kiln tail appears in liquid phase prematurely, thus causing balls in the kiln.

2. Raw material composition fluctuation in kiln burner When the kiln is balled, the repeated shutdown of the raw material preparation system causes the dust collected at the kiln tail to frequently switch between entering the raw material homogenization bin and directly entering the reversing kiln. This will cause the chemical composition of the raw material entering the kiln to fluctuate, destroy the balance of the thermal conditions in the kiln, and create conditions for the system crusting and balling in the kiln. 3. Unstable feeding Unstable feeding will cause the system processing conditions of the kiln to be disordered, that is, when the feeding amount fluctuates from high to low, the temperature at the kiln tail will rise, and the liquid phase of the material will appear earlier under high-temperature calcination conditions; when the feeding amount fluctuates in the opposite direction, the material cannot be well preheated and decomposed in the decomposition furnace, and these materials fall into the kiln tail, thereby providing excellent nucleating agents for the ball core.

4. Poor ventilation in the kiln burner Poor ventilation in the kiln will aggravate the incomplete combustion of coal powder, generate partial high temperature, and directly lead to balling in the kiln. In addition, poor ventilation will cause a restorative atmosphere in the kiln. When the evaporation coefficients of potassium, sodium, chlorine and sulfur in the material increase, the impact on crusting and balling is huge.

5. Low equipment operating rate, frequent start and stop. Low equipment operating rate and frequent start and stop will cause the thermal engineering rules of the kiln system to be disordered, the wind, coal, material and kiln speed cannot be reasonably matched, and the preheater and decomposition furnace will frequently collapse, resulting in large balls in the kiln.

6. Enrichment and circulation of harmful components. When harmful components such as alkali, chlorine and sulfur are enriched and circulated in the system, it will reduce the eutectic temperature of the material and form a cohesive substance, creating favorable conditions for the formation of ball cores, forming small ball cores and rolling larger and larger in the process of rolling forward.
